Virus of Faith Strikes Again - Massacre of Innocents in Florida
During the early morning of Sunday, June 12, in Orlando, Florida, Omar Mateen Siddiqui, a self-described Islamist, killed 50 people in a nightclub frequented by gays. More than 50 people were critically injured. Born of Afghan immigrant parents, Omar Mateen was 29 years old and declared his allegiance to ISIS in a last minute 911 call. His mayhem was carried out by an assault rifle and lasted for a few hours.

It was early morning of April 23. Professor Rezaul Karim Siddiquee of Rajshahi University was on his way to work. The assailants were waiting, they did not hesitate. Rezaul Karim was hacked to death only a few yards from his home. His crime? He was a lover of arts and music. He ran a small cultural organization called Komolgandhar with his students, published a literary magazine called Sundaram. Is this enough to garner the wrath of the Islamists? In this open season on freethinkers anything is possible in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared her government would not be responsible for anything that happens to the freethinkers or rationalist bloggers.

Exactly one year ago, on the 26th of February, 2015, Avijit Roy, founder of the Muktomona Blog, was brutally murdered at the Dhaka Book Fair. Avijit Roy was visiting Dhaka in conjunction with the publication of two of his books. The attack also grievously injured his wife Bonya Ahmed.
