The American Dream -- An Illusion or Reality?
In two pages, Fitzgerald epitomized the desperation that has fueled the American Dream for centuries. It was not greed for more money that started the dream, but a more tragic catalyst: a hope for a better future. This being said, Gatsby shows that the "Dream" was not cultivated by the rich, but by the poor – people whose drives to make something of themselves stem from the fact that they were born from nothing. Gatsby's infatuation with Daisy is then interpreted as the infatuation that the poor have with money, because it is the gateway to a brighter future:
Children like yours
It was Shahana's first trip abroad. Shahana was a 10th-grader at an English medium school in Dhaka, and she was part of a student exchange program that had been jointly established by her school and a partner school in New York City. Every summer, a student from her school is selected and sent to the United States to spend four weeks with the family of a student at their partner school. In return, an American student then spends four weeks in Bangladesh in the following winter.
Bangladesh's invisible minority
Babu and Arif have been friends from childhood. They went to school together, played on the same cricket team and had no secrets – except one, but only until recently. While they were out having phuchkas at a street stand somewhere in Dhaka, Arif suddenly slipped into an awkward silence for a couple of seconds.
"Babu, shon, toke amarkichubolar ache… Listen, I want to tell you something…"
"What is it, dosto?"
"I haven't been fully honest with you… Remember when I told you that I really like that girl? That wasn't quite true. It's actually her brother I like. I am gay."
How it all began?
It has been some time since I contributed to this discussion, but I came across some comments on one of my previous posting with the same title. After seeing those comments I again felt to contribute a bit on this topic.
Indoctrinated to Hate the Humanity
One Mr. Jubair Ahmed sent the appended poetry to Texas A&M University listserv, AM-BSALIST@LISTSERV.TAMU.EDU. Even though it is much polished and civilized than the actual doctrine of the 6th century, it contains insult and hatred addressed to those who do not follow his scripture. The listserv and its members of other faiths tolerated discussion and promotion of a particular religion for years. But this time one Ms Sumitra Biswas humbly asked some obvious questions for such hatred to the others. At long last, the community realized that it was not fair for Mr. Ahmed to put such a hateful poetry in the listserv and Sumitra was appreciated for bringing up the issue to the light.
Bravo Bangladesh's judiciary!
Bangladesh High Court gets high mark for ruling on women's rights to reject the modesty veil when a man of power wants to exert his whim ordering his subordinate to sport a hijab or any kind of modesty veil. Don't we live in the dawn of the twenty first century? Some men in Bangladesh may think they live in medieval age if one judges the way they behave in public places. One such incident took place a year ago in Kurigram.
